Pilgrimage to Assisi and Rome
Embark on a transformative journey through the picturesque landscapes and sacred sites of Italy, retracing the footsteps of two iconic saints—Francis and Clare of Assisi. This pilgrimage is not just a physical expedition; it’s a spiritual journey that will immerse you in the profound legacy of these holy figures.
Our adventure begins in the Eternal City of Rome. Here, amid the grandeur of the Vatican City, you’ll stand in awe before the magnificent St. Peter’s Basilica. Delve into the rich history of Christianity as you explore the Vatican Museums, St. John Lateran Basilica, The Colosseum, and more.
The pilgrimage continues onward to the charming town of Assisi, nestled amidst Mt. Subasio and olive groves. As you wander through its narrow cobblestone streets, you’ll feel the timeless presence of SS. Francis and Clare. Your life will be transformed through participation in various prayers, rituals, Eucharistic celebrations, and historical visits to sacred sites which Francis and Clare would have visited themselves.
We will visit the Basilica of St. Francis, a masterpiece of medieval architecture, adorned with stunning frescoes by Giotto, where Francis and his companions lay at rest. In the Basilica of St. Clare, you’ll reflect on the teachings of St. Clare, the founder of the Poor Clares, and find inspiration in her unwavering devotion to simplicity and service. Take a moment to pray before the San Damiano Crucifix, the very crucifix that told Francis to “Go rebuild My Church.” Down in the valley of Assisi, there will be an opportunity for a scenic picnic lunch before exploring the Porziuncola, a small chapel which Francis cherished and established his Order.
As you walk in the footsteps of St. Francis and St. Clare, you’ll not only discover the beauty of Italy’s landscapes but also encounter the timeless wisdom of these holy figures. Let their enduring legacy guide you on a path of faith, compassion, and inner renewal—a pilgrimage of the soul that will help us to “fix our gaze on God.”
