Pilgrimage for Board of Trustees

Pilgrimage BrochureA pilgrimage has been designed for the new and current members of Boards of Trustees from various Franciscan-sponsored colleges and universities of the Association of Francisan Colleges and Universities.

When an individual joins a Board of Trustees there is much to absorb about the particular college or university.  At times, this can be overwhelming -- learning about the history and sponsorship of the institution, finances, politics of higher education, the faculty, staff, and the mission of the school can be daunting.  Institutions with a Franciscan mission are unique.  They are not ordinary colleges or universities; rather they prepare students to enter into the world with a very specific Franciscan world vision in regards to community, education, peace, relationships, and alternative models of decision making.

It is our hope that a pilgrimage geared specifically for new and current members of the various Boards will assist the individual to not only learn about St. Francis and St. Clare and their impact on the Church and world, but will also provide an experience of Franciscan life, mission, philosophy, and theology in an unique and personal way.  Such pilgrimages also help to create community among the pilgrims and a deeper shared vision by the board as a whole.

Board members are invited to bring along spouses and partners along with other members of their Boards as a way to share the experience.

During the pilgrimage, both Fr. Tom Bourque and Fr. Mike Higgins - who are both educators and friars involved in Franciscan institutions of higher learning - will not only lead the pilgrims along the streets of Assisi but will offer insights and support in assisting the pilgrim in his or her role and responsiblity as a member of a Board of Trustees of a Franciscan sponsored institution of higher learning.  Pilgrims will be invited to reflect upon the Franciscan charism and how the charism relates to their own particular institution of higher education.  Some of the topics to be shared and discussed include: mission, Franciscan charism, sponsorship, role of the trustees, vocation of the President - and spirituality, theology, and leadership from a Franciscan perspective.
